NeWs VaLuEs HoMeWoRk...
:
This particular story is about the 'perverts' and 'paedophiles' that are in Britain and what can be done about them...it appears in 'The Sun' and is by Martin Phillips and Sam Wostear...(March 12, 2007)
Continuity...the continuity of this specific newspaper article is very important as one assumes more coverage will follow after this article...
Its meaningfulness is also vially as important as one can see that it reflects the British society and the bad things that happen in the world today. This type of news is trying to make us more aware of the issues that are in society today and just how important it is for us to solve them.
Negativity in this article is very strong as it is talking baout not only the criminals themselves but also the victims of the crimes..such as stalking etc.
This story is on Boots rejecting the KKR bid for a £10 a share takeover “The proposal does not reflect the fundamental value of the company or the attractive prospects, opportunities and synergies available to Alliance Boots following the very recent completion of its merger.”
Lots of continuity as the Boots company are very well known and one can see that people will want to know more about wha s going on in and arround the Bootc company eg. loyal customers etc.
Finally there is also alot of mention of the elite...as one is referrign to chairmans and heads of commitees and boards etc.
This third newspaper article is about a ministers resigning in proporsal to the Trident nulear missile programme.
Personalisation...this story refers to the actions of one individual...this is called personalisation and although the man in question himself is not famous he is a former minister.
More so there are signs of continuity here as the acitons of his fellow ministers will also be reported and their personal views will be assumed to be published.
Shilpa Shetty meets the Queen...this story is mainly about one person Shilpa Shetty...and her involvment with the queen.
It is very personalised and therefore can fit in the personalisation catergory as it it is taking into account the actions of one person. Continuity here may or may not be seen as one does not know wha might happen after Shilpa Shetty meets the queen.

ELLE magazine targets 18-25 year olds and perhaps older. The front cover of this magazine features a very sexy saucy picture of a woman. Although usually there is alwyas a picute of a woman on the front cover this picture is quite revealing and sexy.YOUR ULTIMATE SWIMSUIT ISSUE...the use of the word 'you' emphasises the readers feelings and involvment with the magazine....making them feel more aware and at ease of one of the taglines of the magazine. The woman on the front cover is a very attractive striking blonde woman. A medium close up shot can be seen in which her face and upper body is shown. There is also quite some emphasis on the womans breasts and her silver jewellery matches her bold, sheek striking look. The masthead is cleverly positioned so that the womans head is in the middle of ELLE, this not only emphasises the womans head but it always puts us as the potential buyer/reader of the magazine at ease as it makes the woman feel me physically attatched to the title.

the reception theory is all about how the media text itself is interpreted by the audience themselves, it focuses on the individuals beliefs and their meaning of the text. It suggests that we decode different meanings depending on our backgrounds. The reception theory tries to understand the differences and thus looks at other factors such as gender and social status and our social context. David Morley refers to the living room, and the routine that one has within their media consumption.
x...eFFeCtS tHeOrY......eFFeCtS tHeOrY......eFFeCtS tHeOrY...x
the effects theory suggests that we as an audience are passive and that value sand ideolgies are easily injected into us. It can also be linked to the hypodermic needle theory where the audience is seen as completely passive and seen to take in anything the media has to offer. The Frakfurt school saw the rise of culture industry.
x...UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS......UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS......UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS...x
this theory states that the individual is active and therefore has a choice over what texts they consume. It also states several reasons for the audience to choose what text they have chosen.
x...pLuRaLiSM......pLuRaLiSM......pLuRaLiSM...x
this theory is where the audience is in control and they can choose what media they want to consume. In this the audience has the freedom of choice to choose what texts they find interesting and most appealing to them. There is no underlying hegemonic message unlike the other theories.
x...SiMiLaRiTiEs aNd DiFFeReNcEs......SiMiLaRiTiEs aNd DiFFeReNcEs...x
UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS theory and the ReCePtiOn tHeOrY both state that the audiencehave a choice in what kind of media text they consume, HoWeVeR the eFFeCtS tHeOrY states somethign totally different, it says that the audeince is made to view certain texts.
UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS theory and the ReCePtiOn tHeOrY both state that the audience is active, on the other hand the eFFeCtS tHeOrY once again states something diffferent, it says that they are passive.
UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS theory looks into why the audience read a certain text whereas the ReCePtiOn tHeOrY looks at how the audience reads the text.
x...wHiCh oNe i BeLiEvE iN tHe mOsT?wHiCh oNe i BeLiEvE iN tHe mOsT?...x
i beleive that the UsEs aNd GrAtiFiCaTiOnS theory is most suitable, as I beleive that the audience to a certain extent does have the power to choose what texts they consume. It assumes the audience is active which I bileive is true as an individual shouldhave a sense of power and freedom. For example some main reasons people view texts is because either they like them, or to pass time. More simply they view them because they want to, hence going back to what was being said before about choice and individuality.
However on the other hand the eFFeCtS tHeOrYstates that moral panics can be arisen in the media very easily and this can be seen for many cases invluding the BiRd fLu. More so the ReCePtiOn tHeOrY can also be very useful as it consists of the theorist David Morley and his beelif in three main types of reading: oPpoSiTioNaL, NeGoTiAtEd and the DoMiNaNt. Overall I feel as if though the individual should have a certain amont of choice when deciding what media they wish to consume!

marxism
:
...MaRxiSm...
Marxism refers to the philosophy and social theory based on Karl Marx's work on one hand, and to the political practice based on Marxist theory on the other hand (namely, parts of the First International during Marx's time, communist parties and later states). Marx, a 19th century German, Jewish-born atheist, socialist philosopher, economist, journalist, and revolutionary, often in collaboration with Friedrich Engels, developed a critique of society which he claimed was both scientific and revolutionary. This critique achieved its most systematic (albeit unfinished) expression in his most famous work, Capital: A Critique of Political Economy, more commonly known as Das Kapital (1867).
Followers of Marx and Engels have drawn on this work to propose a grand, cohesive theoretical outlook dubbed Marxism. Nevertheless, there have been numerous debates among Marxists over how to interpret Marx's writings and how to apply his concepts to current events and conditions. The legacy of Marx's thought is bitterly contested between numerous tendencies who claim to be Marx's most accurate interpreters. There have been many academic theorists, social movements, political parties and governments who have claimed to be founded on Marxist principles. Indeed academic theorising on Marxism is so widespread that there are a number of different schools of Marxism in addition to the classical Marxism of Marx and Engels.
Similarly the use of Marxist theory in politics, including the social democratic movements in 20th century Europe, the Soviet Union and other Eastern bloc countries, Mao and other revolutionaries in agrarian developing countries have added new ideas to Marx and otherwise transmuted Marxism so much that it is difficult to specify its core.

...man held over child murders...
:
A MAN being held by police on suspicion of murdering two young children at their home is the victims’ father, police have revealed. Perry Samuel, 35, is being quizzed after Caitlin Samuel and her brother Aidan Samuel, aged five and three, died in hospital. He is said to have lived at the family home with the children’s mother Sarah Graham in Bodelwyddan, north Wales. The family home, a red brick end-terrace on Coronation
Close, was cordoned off by police tape today.
Two children’s bicycles lay discarded outside the front door, alongside two deckchairs.
Flowers and soft toys, including a Winnie the Pooh bear, had been left by well-wishers.
A card read: “Two beautiful angels. Your beautiful smiles will be so sadly missed but will never be forgotten.”
Neighbours in the street of former Army homes spoke of their shock. John Bairstow, who has lived there for 18 years, said: “This is a family-oriented area.
“It is terribly sad news, particularly as I’m sure this little boy and girl will have been well-known to the children and other families on this street.”Reverend Berw Hughes, vicar of St Margaret’s Church, said the sense of community meant the tragedy would be felt even more keenly.
He said: “Something like this would be difficult wherever it happened, but it will hit this community very hard because it is the sort of place where people still know and talk to each other.”
Both children attended Ysgol y Faenol school. Head teacher Martin Edwards said: “Our whole school community has been deeply shocked and saddened at this tragic loss. “The two children were bright, popular and happy pupils and will be very sadly missed by their classmates and the staff at the school. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time.”
A mother whose children attend the school said: “The kids were told when they arrived at school this morning. They don’t really understand what has happened, and there has been a lot of tears.
“Everybody is devastated. They were such lovely, sweet little children. You’d see them playing in the garden together. It is just unbelievable.”
Detective Superintendent John Chapman is leading the North Wales police investigation into the murders.
He said: “Shortly before 11pm last night police were called to an address in Bodelwyddan.
“Once at the property, officers searched the house and discovered two children. The children, believed to be a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, were given immediate medical attention.
“The ambulance service was alerted and the two children, who were brother and sister, were taken by ambulance to Glan Clwyd Hospital.
"They were both pronounced dead at the hospital less than an hour later.“Police inquiries into the incident are well under.”He described the children’s family as “extremely traumatised“. A post mortem is due to take place, and the house has been examined for forensic clues.

UK TEENS...Europes worst!
:
BRITAIN'S youths are some of the worst behaved in Europe, according to new research.
A series of studies by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), show British 15-year-olds are drunk more often, involved in more fights and a higher proportion have had sex, compared with their counterparts in Germany, France and Italy.
The figures state that in 2003, 38 per cent of 15-year-old Brits had tried cannabis, as opposed to 7 per cent in Sweden and 27 per cent in Germany. According to the IPPR, the studies suggest that British adolescents can be defined by how they spend their spare time.
While 45 percent of 15-year-old boys in England and 59 per cent in Scotland spend most evenings with friends, in France that figure stands at just 17 per cent. And in Europe, teenagers are more likely to sit down to a meal with their parents. In Italy 93 per cent eat regularly with their families, compared with 64 per cent in the UK.
Nick Pearce, director of the IPPR, said last night the figures pointed to "increasing disconnect" between children and adults, with youngsters learning how to behave from each other. He said: "Because they don't have that structured interaction with adults, it damages their life chances. "They are not learning how to behave - how to get on in life - as they need to." The IPPR report will be published in full on Monday.
